Ryan Neighbors played keyboards for the proggy rock band Portugal. The Man until 2012, when he left to form the synth-heavy power trio Hustle and Drone. The group is preparing to release their first LP, HOLYLAND, September 2 with Red Bull Sound Select.
We were approached to tackle the video for the album’s lead single, “The Glow,” a fist-pumping energy of an arena-rock anthem, and also produce a short documentary about the band with a multitude of synthesizers. This was an enormous task - given that we only had 1 shoot day to capture everything we needed.
This project truly was a collaborative effort with Red Bull, Hustle & Drone, and the Steller Park team all working together seamlessly to secure amazing locations (Moda Center) and a bevy of extras / talent (stunt dunkers).
In post production, we shifted gears a bit and ended up creating a whole "album release package" for Hustle & Drone that included: 6 short documentary style videos, 4 instagram videos and the music video. Our idea was to leave nothing on cutting room floor and arm Hustle & Drone with a mountain of content that they could continually release, amplifying awareness for their LP.
Working with Ryan of Hustle & Drone was a true collaboration of the best kind - from the very beginning he was interested in a vibe that was, "dirty, sweaty & silvery - wrapped around his love for basketball". His vision and concept quickly aligned with our initial ideas as we started on style frames and mood boards. Added along the creative path was black/white liquid bursting portraits, stunt dunkers in lucha masks and using visual fx to apply an intense basketball texture to Ryan's face.
"Working with Joe and his crew was such a blast. We worked hard, had great hang outs, and produced an outstanding final product. We are already discussing the next video."
